Acoustic Guitar Humidity
Presence Security helps you monitor the temperature and humidity of your acoustic guitar storage with wireless sensors to help you maintain the sound quality and value of your guitar. Now you can keep a close eye on prized instruments, like a Rockbridge guitar, with wireless motion, temperature and humidity sensors that alert to your iOS, Android and desktop worldwide.
“If the humidity is too low, the wood on your guitar will shrink,” says Rockbridge guitars’ co-founder and luthier Brian Calhoun. “This can cause buzzing, cracks, and many other problems that can easily be avoided if you prevent your instrument from getting too dry”
Rockbridge Guitar Company is a four-man custom guitar shop in Charlottesville, VA. Rockbridge's limited annual production of 60 guitars allows for painstaking attention to detail, resulting in instruments with exceptional tone and beautiful craftsmanship. The company takes its name from Rockbridge County, Virginia, as homage to the homeland of the luthiers. There team handcrafts customized guitars for some of the greatest names in music including; Dave Matthews, Ray LaMontagne, Warren Haynes, Mick Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and many others.
“Wood absorbs and releases humidity,” says Calhoun, whose foundation of fine instrumentation took technical root at the Berklee College of Music in the late 90’s. “If your guitar is exposed to high moisture in the air, the wood will actually expand. In addition to negatively affecting the sound of your instrument, too much humidity will make the guitar much harder to play as the top expands and raises the action. Glue joints are also weakened and can fail when the guitar is too humid.”
Our Presence humidity sensors link up with the Presence Security gateway that’s included with our Presence Security Premium Pack or you purchase the humidity sensor separately to link up with your Presence Entry or Security Pack. You can get constant humidity readings of the interior of your guitar case and set up rules that alert you if conditions are not desirable. Our sensors are small enough to put inside of your case pocket or accessory compartment and will relay reading if your guitar is within the gateway’s range.
“I recommend storing your guitar in its case with a Planet Waves Two-Way Humidification System, or storing the guitar in a room where humidity is monitored and kept between 40 – 50%,” says Calhoun.
Guitar Case Temperature Notifications
It’s also good to maintain a specific temperature range, “The ideal temperature for a guitar would be around 72 degrees. Rule of thumb is, if you are comfortable, your guitar is probably okay.”
Presence temperature sensors come with the Presence Security Premium Pack and the Presence Security Pack. You can also order them separately to link up with your Presence Gateway. When you add Presence door entry sensor to your closet or a Presence Touch Sensor inside your case to add a wireless fortress around your guitar.
