How to Set up Geofencing with your Presence App

Introduction to Geofencing and Modes

Geofencing is a feature that uses the physical location of your mobile device to tell Presence when to go into Home or Away mode. Subsequently, any rules related to Home and Away mode will be affected.

There are 2 other ways go change modes.

-Presence page – manually change mode.

-Rules – you can create a rule to change modes.

1. Location:

Geofencing is located on the “Modes” Page. You access it from the Presence Home page the top selection, by default, it is set to Home Mode ( other modes are Away, Sleep and Vacation).

2. Device Permissions to access Locations:

Like all applications that access device “Locations,” you may be asked to give Presence permission to access it. In fact, you may be prompted twice.

Once to enable Location access in general and once to let Presence have access.

If you navigate to your location settings go to:

( Device) Settings > Privacy > Location

3. To start Geofencing :

  • a. Enable Geofencing on the modes screen
  • b. Set your home location
    • 1. Tap refresh
    • 2. Then tap save.

Your Geofencing is now enabled.

What happens now ?

There is a zone established by a virtual boundary in a circle at 1/3 of mile from your home (500 meters). This does depend on your device checking in to your provider.

So this is more accurately worded, “A home/away change will be trigger the first time your device checks in after it passes into or out of the zone.

If you are home and your mode is set to home and you pass out of this zone two things should happen:

1. Should get an alert “Going into away mode”

2. Your mode should automatically change to “Away”

When you pass back into the zone:

Should get an alert “Arrive at Home” and your mode should change to Home.

Rules fire when the mode changes. So if you are physically at home and you mode is set to Away when you pass out of the ½ km zone your mode will not change to Away ( since it is already is in Away mode). So any rules that start off with “If I go away then” will not execute.

How to deactivate geofencing.

Geofencing is deactivated on the Modes” Page. You access it from the Presence Home page (Top selection in the menu). Tap on whatever mode it is set to (Home, Away, Sleep or Vacation).

Then deselect geofencing.

Multiple devices and geofencing.

We do not yet support multiple devices and geofencing. If you have 2 devices with geofencing on your system will respond to the last event from either. Whichever entered or left the zone last. We will in the future.

The rest is up to you. You can set rules to take advantage of your Home and Away location.
