"Alexa ask Presence to..."

The Amazon Alexa Presence and Presence: Optimized for Smart Home skills allow you to monitor and control your smart home devices and sensors. Easily turn on, dim or brighten your lighting with your GE Link bulbs. Set groupings for your lights. Turn your Presence Smart Plugs on or off that connect your Presence Security with your everyday appliances that you plug into the wall. You'll also have the ability to voice to your Presence Thermostat to adjust the temperature.

Get Started

  1. Enable the Presence skill by opening the Alexa App and going to Skills, then searching for Presence.
  2. After selecting to enable the skill you will be required to enter in their Presence username and password
  3. When you are finished, close the tab to return to the Alexa app.
  4. Say "Alexa, ask Presence about this skill."

Things you can say with Presence 

  • Turn on/off lights and smart plugs and light bulbs
  • Set the brightness of your light bulbs
  • Adjust the thermostat temperature and mode
  • Manage your Presence modes
  • Control camera

Depending on the devices that you have, below we've prepared a list of things to ask Alexa to test.

"Alexa, open Presence" - to open the Presence skill

"Alexa, ask Presence for help." - learn more about Presence

"Alexa, ask Presence for its availability" - to check on all devices

"Alexa, ask Presence for the status of ________________ (lights, plugs, living room, closet, first floor, my house, etc.)" - to get a specific device status or room/zone status of devices in that area

"Alexa, ask Presence to turn on/turn off my devices." - to turn on/off all devices

"Alexa, ask Presence to turn on/turn off my ______________________ (lights, plugs, living room, closet, first floor, my house, etc.)" - to turn on/off a specific device or devices in that room/zone

"Alexa, ask Presence to brighten/dim my lights." - to brighten/dim all lights

Custom groups with Presence 

 If you want to control devices by groups or zones (e.g. living room, upstairs, downstairs, garage, etc.), you'll need to put those devices into a group. You can do this by opening the Presence app, select 'Cameras & Devices', tapping the device that you want to put into a group, tapping 'Edit', and re-naming your device into one of the following groups.

Living Room: living room, family , family room, den, lounge , tv, tv room, entertainment, entertainment room, entertainment center

Kitchen: kitchen, pantry, dining room sink, fridge, refridgerator, table, microwave, oven, freezer
Master Bedroom: bed, bedroom, sleeping chamber, master , master bedroom, main bedroom, bedchamber

Closet: closet, cabinet, cupboard, wardrobe , panel, electric panel, utility, solar

Hallway: hallway, corridor, hall, lobby , entrance

Outside: outside, exterior, porch, deck, driveway , patio, balcony, veranda, sun, sun room, gate, yard, mailbox, terrace, dog, dog house

Basement: basement, cellar , downstairs, wine, bottom, safe

Presence: Optimized for Smart Home skill

Using Amazon's Smart Home API, this skill enables fine-tuned control over your Presence lights, plugs and thermostats.

You'll be able to:

  • Turn on/off lights and smart plugs
  • Set the brightness of your light bulbs
  • Adjust the thermostat temperature

Get Started

  1. Enable the Presence: Optimized for Smart Home skill by opening the Alexa App and going to Skills, then searching for Presence.
  2. After selecting to enable the skill you will be required to enter in their Presence username and password
  3. When you are finished, close the tab to return to the Alexa app.
  4. Upon enabling the skill, Alexa will automatically begin discovering compatible Presence devices.
  5. On completion, Alexa will tell you how many devices were found.


If you want to control devices by groups or zones (e.g. living room, upstairs, downstairs, garage, etc.), you'll need to put those devices into a group. You can open the Alexa app and go to the Smart Home menu. From there, you can create new groups of devices by selecting "Create Group" under Your Groups.
